Captain’s Log

DECEMBER 2007

This past weeks fishing has been flat out spectacular. We have been catching limits of speckled trout and lots of nice reds. The fish are not quite into winter patterns yet the weather and water temperatures have been above normal. I have been fishing fall patterns and using a lot of popping corks and the box has been coming in full every time. We still have live shrimp and they are the best bait but the Old Bayside Shadlynn’s in gold glitter and electric chicken are doing just as good. All we need is a little colder weather to anchor the trout in the deeper water and in consistent winter patterns and the live bait will be gone till the spring.

NOVEMBER 2007

November 19, 2007 - Charles Johnson always makes a few trips with me every fall for the past 5 yrs and this year will be no different. Tuesday we started out right on, some nice fish but some boats ran thru them, so it was off on the hunt. It only took two more stops to fill the guy’s limit along with a couple of reds for the grill. Live shrimp under corks or plastic was doing the job.  50 TROUT & 6 REDS.

November 4, 2007 - The crew from Southern Glass Gary, Mike, Gary, and Dukie put a whipping on the specks Thursday morning. The first couple of spots nothing then we found the trout on the windy shoreline holding off the a point along with drums and reds mixed in. Campo shrimp under the cork was doing the job. The box was looking good when things slowed to a crawl. Time to move. Made a short run deeper in the marsh and rounded a turn in the bayou and BIRDS! diving in front of a little drainout. Trout on non stop to the guy's filled their limit. The fish were not feeding on shrimp but  pot bellied minnows coming out of the drain with the falling tide, but they had no problem hitting a live Campo shrimp thrown in the current. Great day box full of fish and did not have to go far to do it.  LIMITED OUT !100 SPECKLED TROUT, 8 DRUMS, & 2 REDS.

OCTOBER 2007

October 24, 2007 - Bernie and Beverly and Boob and Sue had another super trip Saturday. We were scheduled for Friday but pushed the trip back because of a cold front blowing in and things worked out perfect. We got right to work on the trout at out 3rd stop, live shrimp under corks steady action for awhile then things slowed. On the move we fished some birds but the fish were tiny. Found the trout in a shallow cove out of the wind and eager to take our baits, live shrimp and Old Bayside plastic Shrimp in glow under a cork. The action heated up to a fish on every cast for awhile and the box filling up fast. Bernie said he wanted to get the girls hooked up on some line stretching reds so we left the trout to search out the reds. Two stops later and the drags were running. Everyone got into the redfish action after popping few lines and putting 7 in the box we called it a day. Beautiful fall weather and great fishing action, the fall fishing is now in full swing.               80 SPECKLED TROUT, 7 RED FISH, & 1 FLOUNDER .

October 8, 2007 - Nathan Smith set up this trip for his Dad and Brother and boy did they have a good time. We started out right on the trout but a boat came through right over the fish and ended it early, no problem moved on and found some more. The trout were scattered and mixed in size but the action was steady. We had a nice mess on ice and Nathan wanted his dad to pull on some reds so off we went. They were a little hard to find only one or two at a time but we kept at it and filled the box with some beautiful reds. Great day father and sons that is what it is all about age does not matter.

SEPTEMBER 2007

September 27, 2007 - Some of my regulars Charlie Miramon his brother Bernie and Bob Sagona were waiting for me at the dock itching to get going. The winds looked favorable so we headed outside. Stated out on the edges of Black Bay second stop and corks were going down and trout coming in the boat. The fish were on some oyster beds in 4 ft water Nice Specks and White trout mixed in. The action was steady with both live shrimp and Old Bayside Shrimp under corks. The trout started to get small so went further out MISTAKE! Dirty water and rough. Back in the grass to hunt some reds. Live or dead shrimp up close to the grass off the points with moving water is where we found them. Perfect sized 20 to 25 inches along with a few puppy drum in the mix. Great day lots of laugh’s ass usual with these guy’s and a box full of fish. Sorry the Capt. forgot the camera .  62 Trout, 11 Reds, & 4 Drums

September 12, 2007 – Bob, Charlie, Gene, and David Were ready to go this morning, the forecast looked iffy but I talked to Bob last night and we agreed to just go down this morning and see what happens.  Bob was itching to catch some fish; he had knee surgery and was out of the game for a while.  Well Good fortune was upon us no thunderstorms or lighting and light winds.  Fired up the Optimax and headed straight for the sound.  First stop zero not even a bite.  Moved further out second stop got into some trout but the catfish and ladyfish took over.  Hopped over to another rig and got few trout on the drift so we  hooked on the rig  to see what would happen.  Well we got the trout started up and then it was on corks 3 ft with live shrimp and Old bayside shrimp.  The trout were eating up and before long; the box was just about full along with a big red at the end to top things off.  AWESOME DAY 3 STOP SHOP!  100 TROUT & 1 BULL RED

AUGUST 2007

August 23, 2007 - Got some great weather yesterday morning for some good friends of mine Sammy Gill, his son in law David and Sponge Bob Balser and the trout were in the mood. On the way out I had a hunch with the light East winds to try spot that has produced in the past under similar conditions and hit the nail on the head.  First cast 2 lb trout in the boat, stuck down and things heated up fast. Live shrimp and plastic under corks 3 ft had trout flying in the boat for awhile.  Sammy hooks up and trout jumping out the water like crazy. "We Got Us A Jumper Boys" he exclaimed and we got a good laugh that was the phrase for the day every time a trout would come out of the water. The action was steady all nice fish in the 2 lb range no throwbacks. Just about a limit on ice I wanted to check a few more spots further out... David did battle with a line stretching drag screaming Jack Cravelle for awhile Fun to catch so we took a picture and returned him to the water. Got into a few more nice trout at the rigs in Black Bay finishing up our limit then tried the reds at a few points on the way in but only found a few puppy drum. With a box full of trout on ice we decided to make it an early day before the heat set in. AWESOME DAY! With good friends having a good time fishing.  100 SPECKLED TROUT

August 8, 2007 - Jimmy Vidrine his son Bret and Nick Sanchez and his sin Jacob were down Hopedale way today and ready to get these two youngsters into some fish. Well the wind was strong and from the West which is not the best for Hopedale area. So I headed to where I left them the other day and got a trout few on ice. Wanted to try the rigs before it got to rough only to find 1 or 2 trout willing. Started to work our way back in for some reds when we came across a school of trout feeding outside a drain in Lake Campo. Steady action for awhile the kids and dad’s having fun. The wind seemed to lay down so I headed back to where we started and found them in the mood but it was a slow bite. Shrimp under corks was the way to go no action on the croakers. Worked the area hard until the bite quit. A few more spots and then headed in at 1 PM with a good box of trout. Fished hard and it paid off despite the poison of the west wind.  63 TROUT

JULY 2007

July 19, 2007 - Bernie, Beverly, Bobby, and Sue had one terrific day fishing. Bernie told me he was bringing his FIANCE’ and she had never fished before. The morning started good first stop big trout coming in but it slowed down fast. I moved the boat around some trying stay on the bite. On the move looking for some tide movement and a bite. Got some incoming tide around 9:00AM and the trout turned on live croakers on the bottom and hold on the trout would nail he bait as it drifted with the current. The trout were flying in the boat from all sides for awhile. By the end of the day Beverly and Sue were putting a whipping on the trout and the guy’s. Sue was like a machine I would put a croaker on the hook and she would put a trout in the boat every time. Beverly was Flipping 2 to 3 lb trout in over the bow like no tomorrow like she had been doing all her life. Bernie and Bobby were working hard to hold their own. With a limit of trout on ice we headed in for some redfish action to top off the box. Two stops was all that was needed every one got 1 red each and we called it a day before the heat set in.

July 1, 2007 - Had the the crew from the Laticrete Company in Hopedale again for a 2 day 2 boat Trout and Redfish Slam-a-rama. These guys are regulars a couple times a year and always bring a few new faces too and always a good time and catch a lot of fish too. This trip was no different Lots of laughs and lots of fish hitting the ice chest.
Day One started little slow but we got on some LOG SIZED trout and put whipping on them before heading in the marsh for some RED action. First stop the drags were screaming big reds double and triple hookups. We kept some for lunch and released a bunch too.   Both boats, combined catch 150 Trout & 8 Reds.
Day Two left early and headed for the LOG HOLE. Bite was slow and lots of boats moving around kept things from developing. Blasted off and headed way out to escape the crowd and found the trout eating up LOGS again flying in the boat, they sounded like bricks hitting the deck. After filling the limit we decided to make a run in and pick up some lunch MARSH REDS and Puppy Drum. Two stops and we had what we needed. Larry Romero cooked up the fillets on the grill while we cleaned fish. Fresh Caught and grilled reds on the dock AWESOME! All fish caught on live croaker and shrimp. 2 - 5 lb trout.   Both boats, combined catch 170 Trout & 12 Reds.
